Where to eat around Bailleul: our secret estaminets & restaurants in Flanders

de barbier bed and breakfast bailleuil

In Flanders, the light skims the hills, the tables smell of polished wood and the beer of yeast and bread. Here, we talk quietly about friendship and good food, toast simplicity and celebrate Sundays that last longer than others. From Le Sommelier, our guest house, we've wandered the lanes, alleys and squares to share with you our favourite addresses, the ones that the locals often keep to themselves.

De Barbier

In Dranouter
de barbier bed and breakfast bailleuil

Our Sunday canteen.

There's a gentleness about De Barbier that can't be explained: time just sits there like a hat on a coat rack. Thierry, whom I'm particularly fond of, and his brother orchestrate a place full of poetry, where you find the essentials: home-cooked dishes that warm you up, fine beers drawn just right, frank smiles. It feels like home, and perhaps even better.

What we order

  • Potjevleesch, the famous pot'je, with golden chips
  • For the perfect match, an Orval, my sommelier's advice

Why we love it

  • Simple, authentic, home-cooked food
  • A friendly, unpretentious village atmosphere
  • We'll be back. Always

Tip from the house: call Thierry on behalf of Baptiste, Le Sommelier de la rue.

In de Nachtegaal (The Nightingale)

Heuvelland, Belgium
in de nachtegaal near guest rooms

Koen and Annelies run the kind of place you'd dream of, with a wine list from here and abroad, simple yet sublime cuisine, a well-kept Flemish décor and warm service. You can stop off in the afternoon for a sugar pancake, or stay longer.

What we remember

  • A typical Flanders setting, a crazy decor in the best sense of the word
  • Cooking from the heart, straight to the point and with no frills
  • The perfect address for a snack or a meal

Auberge du Vert Mont

Boeschepe
auberge du vert mont bailleul flandres

Florent Ladeyn, terroir specialist. A Michelin-starred restaurant, not to be missed.

At Le Vert Mont, the story of Flanders is told in hushed tones: fire, herbs, hops, dairy products and local vegetables. The kitchen breathes in the neighbouring field, the moment and the embers. It's a taste of modern, down-to-earth Flanders, without betraying the soul of the estaminets.

Why go there

  • A radical and sensitive reading of the land
  • Ultra-local products, lively dishes
  • View and atmosphere from the top of the mountains

L'Auberge

Caëstre
lauberge caestre sommelier bailleul flandres

An epicurean's table for epicureans.

At Antonin Maresciano's, a great wine-lover, the cuisine is meticulous and meticulous, but gourmet, never austere. Vibrant wines, fine beers, a relaxed atmosphere: this is a table that speaks to those who love it when generosity holds the hand of precision.

Not to be missed

  • The lunchtime menu that changes like the light
  • Let yourself be guided by a blind tasting as the dishes go by
  • The attention to detail that makes all the difference

Aux Cœur Joyeux

Bailleul city centre
sommelier bailleul restaurant chambres hotes

The no-holds-barred brasserie.

Looking for a quick and easy meal? Aux Cœur Joyeux ticks all the boxes: a great wine list, good food and a friendly atmosphere. It's the kind of place where everyone agrees when they're hungry, thirsty and just want to have a good time.

We like

  • Cellar selection
  • The comfort of a city-centre brasserie
  • Efficiency without compromise

Our way of choosing restaurants near Bailleul

We don't list, we recommend. What these establishments have in common is sincerity: a genuine welcome, a plate that tells the story of Flanders without fuss, a glass that has something to say. Not all of them are in the guidebooks, and the locals don't always talk about them. That's why we've entrusted them to you.

Practical advice to make the most of it

  • Booking: at weekends, remember to call as early as possible
  • Flemish opening times: lunchtime service can be earlier than in the city, and evenings can be shorter.
  • Food pairings: ask for a local cheese, a Trappist beer or a lively wine, and let yourself be guided.
  • Soft mobility: several addresses are just a few minutes away by car, and can also be reached by bike if the weather cooperates.
  • From Le Sommelier: we'll be happy to help you book and plan a bucolic itinerary by bike or car.

Our stay at Le Sommelier gîte was exceptional, beyond our expectations! Welcomed like royalty by Baptiste, we had the chance to enjoy a warm welcome and impeccable service. The accommodation is ideal for a business trip - both comfortable and very well equipped, and we appreciated the Nordic bath, a real luxury that helped us relax.
Baptiste's carefully prepared breakfasts were delicious and gave us the energy we needed to start our days on the right foot. He also gave us invaluable advice on the local gastronomy and wines of the region, which he knows like the back of his hand, making for some incredible tasting discoveries.
If you're visiting the Bailleul area, this Airbnb is a must!
